Journey Continues...

Before I start, I just want to let you all know, Today is Birthday of my Childhood Buddy (Chuddy Buddy) and cousin Ranjan who lives in Auckland NZ,  and his birthday has started there.

Happy Birthday Ranjan and this is for you: Movie Yaarana, Music Rajesh Roshan Penned By Anjaan and Sublime voice of Kishore Kumar.

Even this movie had a song which was inspired, but that I will talk about that at a later instance.

So Now into today's story, during my times at Santa Clara (2006-2007), we used to visit the Flea Market on Berryessa Road in San Jose.  The market was awesome, it reminded me of the typical Mela of India (without the rides though). It had a lot of vendors trying to sell the local stuff like handicraft, toiletries, clothes and produce. The interesting thing there was it use to have live music events going on during evenings. And if there was no live music, then the vendors will have big speakers out of their shops and play music. This flea market has most of the vendors were of Spanish origin. So you would listen to a lot of Spanish music while there.  Friends in Bay Area if you haven't been there please go and check it out, its fun. (At least it was back then 😊 )

So one evening I was there with my parents (they were visiting me), As my mother loved this place and always wanted to go there. While walking around the Market, we came across a pirated(?) CD DVD shop (where the guy was selling blockbuster DVD's for $1, each DVD would have 3 or 4 movies in it. Honestly, it was steal, because even if you watch the movie one time and DVD is broken then also you had your dollar worth. However people knowing me would know that I am super against piracy, so I had no intentions to buy But was browsing around. While we were there, the vendor was playing music which was very similar to another classic Jeevan Ke Safar me Rahi. The song playing had a much faster tempo than the Munimji (1955)Song. For once I could not understand it, but then I saw my mother humming Jeevan Ke Safar Me with faster tempo and viola it registered in my head. (Actually, my mother is credited for few other songs identification, which I will talk later). So then I started asking amigo about the song he was playing, and he told me that it was Jarbe Tapatio popularly known as Mexican Hat Dance. Again it is folk music from Mexico and could be easily 200 years old. Here is the Slower version of  Jarbe Tapatio music.  Also, one more thing to note here is that this is the National Dance of Mexico. Now after listening to the slower version, you can see how S.D Burman took inspiration and paired with Sahir and Kishore Kumar to create one of the all-time Devanand Classics. Kishore in those days would only sing for himself or for Devanand, and that would continue till S D Burman (technically R D Burman, his friend as Dada Burman got sick during composition) asked him to sing in Aaradhana for Rajesh Khanna and as they say, rest is history. There were occasional songs in that period which Kishore had sung for R.D Burman prominent being from Bhoot Bungla Jaago Sone Walo.

While I was on equipment training in San Jose in the early part of 2000 for a month, I decided to stay with my school friend from Indore Kiran in Sunnyvale. He was sharing his apartment with 2 other people Shyam and Srikanth, who ended up being really good friends afterward. They all had common friends Nikilesh and Vikram, Vikram's Wife was Nikilesh's sister. Since I became friends with them, whenever I would visit Sunnyvale or Santa Clara later on, will make a point to visit them. In one of the visit's at Vikram's place when I guess his parents or parent-in-law were there (Sorry Vikram, It has been a long time I forgot), We were just discussing songs and movies in general sense. So his Father/Father-in-law passed me this vital information about the next song.

When they say Music is in the air, it certainly means that wherever you go,  you can pick the music from there and improvised to create a breathtaking number and that has been the beauty of some of the composers like Dada Burman (as you have seen above) and next one is also from him.

Incidentally, this one also comes from Devanand's flick  If you guys remember a movie called Bombai Ka Babu (1960), the star cast included Devanand and Suchitra Sen (who became later popular with her portrayal of Indira Gandhi in Gulzar's Aandhi but was originally Dilip Kumar's Paro). The lyrics for the song were given by Majrooh and Sung by Asha Bhosle.
Dada Burman did not have to go Saat Samandar Paar to get inspiration, instead, he got his inspiration from one of the Dravidian language Telugu songs. And that movie was Rojulu Marayi made in 1955. Another Trivia is that this song was Waheeda Rahman's first ever song on Silver screen. How thrilling is this that both of these songs had Indian cinema's two eternal beauties. Back to Rojulu Marayi, the music was composed by Madduri Venu popularly known as Master Venu. The song is  Kalnakaptam. After listening to this song you can easily guess the Bombai Ka Babu Song Dekhne Me Bhola Hai.

Another Trivia Bombai Ka Babu, the movie became an inspiration to another Bollywood movie  15 years later, Zameer (Amitabh Bachchan and Saira Banu).

I will always be in debt of my family and friends on aiding my thirst as you can see how they have been instrumental in the quest. I am really lucky to have such people around me.

That's all for today, the Journey of 50's-60's will continue....

  1. Soni, when I listed to mexican hat dance, I thought it's more matching to "Jahan teri ye nazar hai, meri jaan muze khabar hai" than "Jeevan ke safar me saathi". - Aniket.

    1. Aniket Bhai, that's why I have put the slower version.Listen to the slower version and you can see the inspiration. Jahan Teri Ye Nazar is definitely an inspired song but not by Mexican Hat Dance. But as they say beauty lies in the eyes of beholder ;)
